The Jacksonville Police Department was formed in 19XX when it was the county seat. Due to the lack of records, the best I could find was the following Chief's of Police;

(If you have any information about past police chief, please let us know)

  • August 27, 1928 - Chief John T. Rowland (Killed in Office)
  • 19XX to 19XX - Chief  Hobbs
  • 19XX to 19XX - Chief Ed Sneed
  • 19XX to 1934 - Chief W. A. Venable
  • 1935 to 19XX - Chief C. C. Livingston
  • 19XX to 19XX - Chief Howard Trammell

Chief Bill Harris

  • 19XX to 19XX - Chief Bill Harris
  • June 21, 1955 - Chief D. Emerson Whiteside (Killed in office)
  • 10/09/1956 - 07/31/1981 -  Chief J. Ross Tipton
  • 1981 to 1987 - Chief Paul Locke
  • 1988 to present - Chief Tommy L. Thompson

J. Ross Tipton took the position of Jacksonville Police Department's Chief of Police in 1956.

Chief Tipton's Alabama Police Academy photo. Note, the academy was only two weeks long. I have been told this was on a two week police seminar.

Here is the news paper article that went the class photo above.

As a young man, Chief Tipton loved boxing. I was unable to find anything more, but he must have been fairly good because in this old newspaper clip it talks about him fighting Bill Stone from Chicago.

Some of the things Chief Tipton loved to do was to fish. I probable found more pictures of Chief Tipton and fish, then any other pictures.
